Flying Drones in the UK
Understanding where drones can and cannot legally fly in the UK is essential for safe and compliant UAV operations. Whether you are a business, landowner, property manager or drone operator, failing to follow UK drone regulations can lead to serious safety risks and legal consequences. For tis reason we take the burden off you and take responsibility for the safe legal flying of any drone
At Image Surveys, we operate professional drone services across the UK in accordance with Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) regulations and airspace restrictions. Many areas require specific permissions, operational authorisations or coordination before drone flights can legally take place. For this reason and others we undertake detailed flight planning steps as part of any job and all of this is recorded and available for the CAA to inspect and audit.
Required checks
Required pre-flight checks
We are legally required to check our pilots have up to date licences, flight experience and insurance.
We must also carry out full airspace and flight restriction checks (see below) along with the weather checks and a full site survey with a risk assessment prior to and on the day of the flight.
The drone itself must be maintained correctly, checked each flight and records kept.
In the UK we also check for relevant land over permissions where we are taking off or landing on private ground.
Penalties for breaches are severe and so for this reason we handle all the checks and paperwork for you so you have nothing to worry about as far as the drone operations are concerned.
FLIGHT RESTRICTIONS
Flight Restrictions (Permanent and Temporary
In the UK you cannot just fly anywhere. There are permanent areas where take off can only be granted with prior permission to qualified commercial drone pilots such as near Airports, Prisons and Military bases. Applications for permission are in writing and require details of the operator and the mission planned.
In addition temporary restrictions are imposed daily by the CAA via a series of "Notice to Airman" and restrict flying for special events such as a sporting event, royal visit or an air show. Other issues arise where an area ins built up or is a "Site of Scientific Special Interest" (SSSI) or forms part of national infrastructure.
