Environmental survey work presents a fundamental tension: gathering the detailed data that regulators, funders and conservation managers need, while minimising disturbance to the very habitats and species you are trying to protect.
Drone surveys resolve that tension better than almost any other method. Image Surveys works with environmental consultants, ecology teams, local authorities, conservation charities, utility companies and civil engineers to deliver fast, precise and genuinely low-impact aerial data across some of the most sensitive landscapes in the North West.
From the peatlands of the Forest of Bowland and the coastal dunes of Merseyside, to the estuaries of Lancashire and the wetlands of the Cheshire plain, we understand the environments we work in — and we plan every flight to leave them exactly as we found them.

Low Impact Data Collection Traditional ground surveys require repeated site visits, heavy equipment and teams walking through sensitive habitats — disturbing nesting birds, compacting soil, trampling vegetation and stressing wildlife. Our drones capture the same data, and often far more of it, from the air. A single flight over a wetland or coastal dune system collects comprehensive imagery without a single boot touching the ground. This is particularly important for SSSI-designated land, Special Areas of Conservation and protected bird habitats, where any physical disturbance may require consent.
Rapid Coverage of Large or Remote Areas Environmental sites are often extensive, difficult to access on foot and time-consuming to survey by traditional methods. Drone surveys cover large areas of moorland, estuary, woodland, river corridor or coastal habitat in a fraction of the time a ground team would need. Data that previously required weeks of fieldwork can often be captured in a single day, dramatically reducing both project costs and the time to reporting.
Habitat Mapping & Classification We produce accurate, georeferenced orthomosaic maps and classified habitat layers across your survey area, identifying vegetation types, land cover categories, watercourse extent and habitat boundaries to the precision required for planning submissions, Environmental Impact Assessments and conservation management plans. Data is delivered in formats compatible with GIS software and directly usable by ecologists and planners.
Biodiversity Net Gain Support Since the mandatory introduction of Biodiversity Net Gain under the Environment Act 2021, developers, planners and landowners have needed robust pre- and post-development habitat baseline data. Our drone surveys deliver the accurate, dated habitat mapping and condition assessments that BNG calculations and metric tools require — providing clear, defensible evidence for Natural England, local planning authorities and BNG auditors.
Environmental Impact Assessment Data Planning applications for housing, infrastructure, energy and commercial developments increasingly require detailed EIA ecological data. Our drone surveys provide rapid baseline assessments of habitats and land condition, support pre-application screening surveys and deliver the visual evidence that planners and statutory consultees expect to see.
Change Detection & Long-Term Monitoring Consistent, repeatable drone surveys at planned intervals allow environmental professionals to track landscape change over time with precision — monitoring vegetation encroachment, erosion, habitat restoration progress, flood extent, invasive species spread and coastal change. Each survey uses the same flight parameters and georeferencing, creating a reliable, comparable dataset that builds in value year on year.
AI-Assisted Wildlife & Camera Monitoring For sites where ground-level monitoring is required alongside aerial data, Image Surveys offers access to a class-leading AI-managed camera trap system capable of covering very large areas around the clock. The system uses AI recognition to detect, identify and log animal and bird activity automatically — delivering far more reliable data than traditional manual camera trap methods, with no need for repeated site visits to download images.
Flood Risk & Watercourse Assessment Our drone surveys identify flood risk zones, map watercourse extents, assess bank erosion and record post-flood landscape changes across river corridors, coastal margins and lowland farmland. Used by local authorities, drainage boards, utility companies and environmental consultancies for flood risk management, SUDS design and catchment planning across Lancashire, Cheshire and Merseyside.
Safe Access to Hazardous or Restricted Terrain Marshland, cliff edges, unstable riverbanks, steep moorland slopes and post-flood landscapes can present serious safety risks to survey teams. Drones access these locations without placing staff or volunteers in danger, while delivering higher-quality data than would be achievable from ground level in difficult conditions.

Mapping & Classification Georeferenced habitat maps identifying vegetation types, land cover and habitat boundaries. Compatible with GIS, planning submissions and conservation management plans.
Biodiversity Net Gain Surveys Pre- and post-development habitat baseline surveys and condition assessments for BNG calculations. Meeting DEFRA metric requirements and supporting planning obligations.
Environmental Impact Assessment Support Rapid aerial baseline surveys for EIA ecological chapters. Habitat identification, land condition assessment and photographic evidence for planning applications and statutory consultees.
Watercourse & Flood Risk Surveys 2D and 3D survey grade Mapping of watercourse extents, flood plains, bank erosion and drainage features. Supporting flood risk assessments, SUDS design, catchment management and post-flood recovery.
Woodland & Forestry Surveys Canopy mapping, tree condition assessment, invasive species detection and woodland extent measurement. Supporting woodland management plans, felling licence applications and restocking surveys.
AI Wildlife & Camera Monitoring 24-hour AI-managed camera trap systems for wildlife monitoring across large or sensitive sites. Automated species detection and activity logging — no repeated site visits required.
Ecological Monitoring Programmes Schedule repeat surveys at agreed intervals to track habitat condition, species activity and landscape change over time. Fully documented, georeferenced and delivered in consistent formats.
Pre- & Post-Works Surveys Baseline and follow-up surveys to evidence environmental mitigation, demonstrate restoration success and meet licence and planning conditions.

The North West of England contains some of England's most ecologically significant landscapes — from the internationally important intertidal habitats of Morecambe Bay and the Ribble Estuary, to the upland peat bogs of the Forest of Bowland, the lowland mosses of the Cheshire plain and the shifting sand dune systems of the Sefton coast. These are environments that demand precision survey methods and genuine environmental sensitivity.
Image Surveys is based in Southport, a few miles from the Sefton Coast SAC and SSSI — one of the most ecologically complex dune systems in the UK. That location reflects our roots in environmental work, and our understanding of what it takes to operate professionally in protected and sensitive landscapes.
We cover environmental survey work primarily across:
Merseyside · Lancashire · Cheshire · Cumbria · North Wales · Greater Manchester · Yorkshire Dales · Peak District fringe
We can support:

Do you just fly the drone for us? No, we have a team behind us with expert knowledge in putting surveys together and delivering reports for you
Can you survey an SSSI-designated site ?Yes. We have experience working on and near SSSI sites and understand the consent requirements that apply. We will advise on whether Natural England notification or consent is required for your specific site and survey type, and manage the process accordingly. Consent must be required first so can delay the start of any project.
How do drone surveys minimise disturbance to wildlife? We plan all flights to avoid sensitive breeding seasons where possible, maintain appropriate distances from nesting areas and use flight paths that minimise repeated low-altitude passes. We operate under CAA authorisation with full risk assessments completed before every flight.
Can you provide data for a BNG metric calculation? Yes. We deliver the habitat condition assessments, area measurements and photographic evidence needed to complete DEFRA biodiversity metric calculations. Data is provided in formats compatible with the Natural England BNG metric tool.
What is the AI camera monitoring system? Our ground-based AI camera monitoring system uses machine learning to automatically detect and identify animal and bird species from camera footage across large areas, 24 hours a day. It removes the need for manual image review and delivers far more reliable population and activity data than traditional methods. It is recognised as World leading in its application and we are about to test the latest version.
Do you work outside the North West? Yes. While our primary coverage is Merseyside, Lancashire, Cheshire and Cumbria, we take on environmental survey work across the wider North of England and North Wales, and will travel further for significant projects.
