Farming & Conservation

Land Management using drones

Our advanced drone surveys provide high-resolution imagery,  and thermal imaging, delivering detailed, real-time insights that help landowners, farmers, and conservationists make data-driven decisions—without the need for disruptive on-ground inspections.

Drone Technology for UK Farming

With the changes in climate and a move to "net zero"  we are investing our own time and money into using our skills to research, develop and supply new methods of using drones to help British farmers utilise the benefits of drone technology to save time, protect the environment, improve yields and of course save money. We are proud to be members of the CLA supporting landowners and farmers.

CASE STUDY

The project

We wanted to research the benefits of farmers of using multiple drone sensors to measure plant health and water levels in plants and sub soil based on some American research we had read about in 2022 which has a different approach to agriculture and we  wanted to know if the work was valid and could be applied in the UK.

We have used the Mavic 3E, 3T and 3M drones together and have been surveying a number of fields used for growing celery and lettuce over the past few months. Both the crops have a short growing season so getting results quickly and acting upon results is more challenging. The work continues but below are some of our initial findings that point to some positive outcomes.

CASE STUDY preliminary results

orthomosaic RGB survey of lettuce field

Standard image

Here a standard composite photograph shows a field of lettuce around 4 weeks in to the growing season. The bare area to the mid right is an unplanted area surrounding a telegraph pole. At first glance all appears normal with a couple of areas where plants have not germinated or have died. The area was then resurveyed using thermal and multi spectral sensors at the same height of around 30m

Thermal

Wet ground or crops shows cooler for longer. Conversely dry or arid ground or crops heat up quicker. In the above image, red is hot, yellow is warm, green and blue are cool or cold. This lettuce field clearly shows the area on the left to be noticeably warmer and there is no obvious reason and so points to less water, or in this case probably missed irrigation the previous day. The effect on the plant condition can be analysed further using the multi spectral results

NVDI Image of lettuce field

Multi- spectral

Multi spectral drones measure light reflected from plants. Healthy crops reflect green light (so they appear green) but absorb large amounts of red and near red light. The resulting indices shows up a colour map of red for healthy, yellow for stressed or dying plants and green for bare earth. Taken at the same time as the thermal image this shows the drier area of the field is already exhibiting a higher percentage of stressed or dying crops.
